Competition news

Jubilee Cup

Mark Kimpton shot the lowest gross score of the year and best nett on the day to win the Jubilee Cup, last Saturday, 69-4-65 which included four 2's. I did tell him as he was a late replacement he wasn't in the 2's sweep but it didn't work!

Will Glew was 2nd with 74-6-68 and Mike McLoughlin (75-5-70) beat John Sadler (74-4-70) into 3rd on a card playoff.

Div 2 was won with another great score by John Cubbin (85-16-69) with John Clegg in 2nd place (84-15-69) and Mervyn Robertson 3rd again with 88-18-70.

Ladies Coronation Trophy

Jan Evans continued her good form, winning the Ladies Invitation last week with Jan Randles and their guests, and now having won the Ladies Coronation Trophy in Div 2, on Tuesday, with 95-24-71.

The winner of Div 1 was Barbara Henshaw (100-19-81) on a card playoff from Amanda Dixon

The winner of Div 3 was Joan Harper (113-36-77) on a card playoff from Sue Garner.

Men's Invitation - Spaces Left

The Men's Invitation, which is a Shotgun start at 1.00pm on Sunday, still has some spots left for any of you wanting to play and for those of you playing in the morning the course must be clear by 12.45.

Bromborough Success in Mockbeggar Trophy

A team of four members from Bromborough were very pleased to win an established competition at Leasowe GC on Sunday, 29 May.

For the annual Mockbeggar Trophy our team consisted of the Captain Joe Graham, John McCann, Graham Swaby and Junior Captain Ben Parnell

This competition originated in 1991 and was actually won in its first year by Bromborough. Since then our only other club success was in 2003 so winning again in 2016 was well overdue. All team members contributed on the day and the whole team were very surprised at winning as initial inspection of the results were translated as us being third. However the truth prevailed and the winning score of 99 points from best 3 cards clearly won on the day. The Mockgbeggar Trophy is now in our hands and all members of the team were very pleased to receive individual glass trophies to remember their success. Needless to say the success was celebrated by the team at Leasowe and then back at the bar the bar on return to the club.

Course news

Praying For Rain

The course has dried out a lot with the heat and after the winter I never thought we'd be praying for rain. The greens have gone a little brown in places as the poa annua grass struggles in the heat, whereas the bent grasses we are trying to encourage fare much better. The brownish areas have had extra water and wetting agent applied this week, as well as the overnight water from the sprinkler system, and will recover when the temperatures go back to normal.

Rod has done a piece below for you to read on the course:

Greens Update - Week Of 6th June

- "The long rough really makes the course look good"
- "Have the mowers broken down" (Sarcasm I think!)
- "The rough sets off the rest of the course now it's allowed to grow"
- "It looks a mess"
- "I like all the different colours in the grasses"
- "Some of us can't carry the rough in front of the tees"

The above are just a few comments regarding the course received or heard over the past week or so - pretty varied I think you will agree.

Despite some views to the contrary, The Greens committee do not set out to make life difficult for you, We have reviewed cutting patterns with Jason and we honestly believed that allowing the rough to grow long in the agreed areas, would not impact on play. How wrong can you be! I have already reacted to the ladies who asked me, very politely, I might add, to cut the rough in front of the red tees. We have attended to some of these areas and we shall assess the others later this week. Some other members have written to me or put their thoughts in the "Suggestions Book".

The Greens Committee is conducting course walk on Friday to include a review of the rough. This does not mean that we are about to cut all the rough down to 50 mm - we are not a municipal course. Bromborough is quite a tough course and we intend keeping it that way.

What this means is allowing the rough to grow long unless it is obviously "in play". This begs the question. Is an area of rough extending say 50 m in front of the tee in play? I have to say in my mind it isn't, and if you are in it, play a provisional ball, but this now has to be reviewed following the "up-rising" from some of the members.

I received the following note from one of our scratch team last week and I thought it worth-while reproducing it - some of the issues are very much in hand, but it only emphasises the difficulty of setting up a course that suits ALL levels of golfer. I believe it is wrong to work to the lowest common denominator, as this would result in cutting all of the rough down to semi-rough height!

"Hello Rod hope you don't mind me sending you this, after playing Wallasey in scratch league on Tuesday we chatted at meal time with other greens staff about our course. I know some things have already been addressed but thought you might be interested in their views

Golf course notes from other course greenkeepers:

1. grass too long fairways, surrounds greens
2. cutting patterns too time consuming, should be halved fairways as lifting mowers turning and dropping again takes too long when crossing fairways.
3. fairways need to be cut back against the grain to get a better cut
4. greens and surrounds need to be verticut especially 10 yards run in to greens to give consistency of bounce.
5. long areas of rough a big improvement but needs to be scarified to thin
6. course has fantastic grass coverage but needs to be controlled better
7. course has great potential though and looks healthy.

These are observations from 2 scratch golfing greenkeepers who think this would improve our course."

Rest assured we shall continue to try to present our course in the best possible way. I shall up-date you with our findings following our meeting on Friday. Keep your eyes peeled in the meantime!
