Simon Marron Trophy

Paul Halliwell shot a great score of 73-5-68 to win the Simon Marron Trophy last weekend, which included a 7 on the 14th. In 2nd place after a card playoff was Steve Dermott (75-6-69) and 3rd Simon Newcombe (78-9-69). Div 2 was won by Jon Saxon (88-19-69) followed by Paul McCaffrey (91-21-70) and in 3rd Roger Aitchison (88-17-71).

Chairman's Prize

The Seniors Chairman's prize on Monday was won by Peter Mcque with a great score of 40 points, in the rain, followed by Terry Nelson, 39 points, in 2nd. Sean Corcoran in 3rd beating Larry Evans on a card playoff. At present I don't have the results of the Ladies Calcutta on Tuesday so I let you know them next week.

New Stroke Index

On Saturday, 9th July, I have been asked by the Handicap Committee to run a Stableford Competition trialling a new Stroke Index for the course. We are trying to encourage as many people as possible to play and, rather than come down to book times, they will be available from 7.00am through the Website booking system 14 days before. For those of you playing before 8.00am please pay the week before and anyone else can just pay on the day. Please enter your cards as normal on the computer upstairs after play. The cost will be the normal £2 plus ball sweep.

Pros news

Back From Retirement

This week my clubs came out of retirement when I played at Woodsome Hall, in a PGA Fourball North Region qualifying event, where my partner, Tony Cuppello, and I shot 67 which unfortunately just missed out with 10 partnerships on 67 having a playoff for 1 of the 12 spots. By that time I was back in the shop.

Course news

So Much Grass...

It was also interesting speaking to a lot of other Pros about how all courses are struggling at present to keep up cutting all the grass as it is growing so quickly. Hopefully you will all see a big difference this weekend as the cut has been lowered on the fairway and semi rough machines. Last weekend although they were cut over Thursday and Friday, and by Saturday the fairways were like the Semi Rough and the Semi rough like the normal rough.

The wet weather over the last couple of weeks has unfortunately meant some of the grass has been left lying in certain areas and the green staff over the last couple of days have been round trying to get rid of this. I'm sure Rod will be giving you a full update after He, Jason, and I, go out on a course walk looking at cutting back some of the longer rough close to the teeing areas.

Upcoming events

Bromborough Bowl

Please could any of you entering the Bromborough Bowl please let me know ASAP so I can include you in the draw which will be done early next week.

Tour news

A Great Win And A Great Week Ahead

I hope you all enjoyed watching the US Open, which unfortunately turned into a farce Sunday afternoon with the Dustin Johnson ruling. It was good to see a strong European presence on the final day, although it just goes to show we all have bad rounds, with Lee Westwood especially struggling in the final round. It was however one of those courses where the slightest mistake meant bogey or double bogey came into play.

This week the European tour moves to Germany with some big events coming up over the coming weeks in France and Scotland before the Open at Troon.
