Pros news

One of the greats...

I hope you all enjoyed the golf over the weekend in which I thought was one of the best Opens I have ever seen certainly on a par with 1977 if not better.

The golf from Henrik Stenson & Phil Mickelson was outstanding on a very difficult course. I was lucky I chose Thursday to go and watch which turned out to be the best day.

It was also good to watch the whole day on Sky who I thought did a great job with the coverage.

Back here at Bromborough the July Medal was won by Ray Young 83-13-70 on a card playoff from Alex 'DeChambeau' Peers 78-8-70 with Les Flanagan 3rd with 83-12-71. Alex now has his irons all the same length.

The best score of the day was by Ron Beacall who won Div 2 with 85-16-69 followed by Keith Weaver 88=17=71 who beat Steve O'Donoghue 85-14-71 on a card playoff.

Lady Captains Day

The Lady Captain's day was played on Tuesday, the warmest day of the year not that it had a lot to beat!!

It was won by Caroline Berry with 38 points followed by Sarah Frain with 37 points and Barbara Henshaw 3rd with 35 points.

Mens 2nd Invitation

The sheet for the Mens 2nd Invitation on Sunday, 14 August is now open for bookings in the shop at £35 per couple.

Centenary Cup

There are also a few times available for this weeks Centenary Cup if last minute you get a chance to play.

Greens Update W/C - 18 July 2016

Barn Owls at Bromborough Golf Club

This picture shows two members of the "Barn Owl Trust" with the two owlets from the nesting boxes in the woodland to the right side of the seventh fairway.

Peter Jones, Chairman of our Ecology Group is adding a piece to the website giving more details of this success story.

Fairways and all rough

I am sorry that there has been a lot of cut grass lying around on the fairways and rough recently. We had not had a dry cut for a few weeks until last Thursday and the rain returned on Friday.

The wet grass does not disperse and ends up in clumps around the course. With the arrival of the sunshine we have now had the opportunity to get some dry cuts. Nevertheless, we are still "chasing our tails" to keep up with cutting and we do have some issues in the way the grass is being cut!

I spoke to our local farmer this morning and he can cut the selected areas of the long rough at the beginning of next week assuming the dry weather continues

Greens Surfaces

The results of Alistair Beggs' short agronomy visit are now available on the website. In summary, we have made good progress. The measurements taken on this visit were for smoothness - within "Tournament Range", trueness - just outside "Tournament Range" and speed - 9ft. 0in.

The reason for the trueness having slipped back a little is down to the density of grass. With the very wet weather, we were not able to verti-cut as soon as we would have liked. It is apparent that we shall need to verti-cut sooner in the future (assuming as always that we have the growth we need and the weather is favourable).

Wednesday and Thursday of last week were dry days giving us the opportunity to verti-cut the greens on the Thursday. I think you will agree that the greens have stood up to the wet weather extremely well. They continue to drain effectively and surfaces have been generally good.

Stenson win

The 145th Open Championship saw Callaway’s Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson go head-to-head in a Sunday showdown that will go down as one of the greatest ever – it really was some display of ball striking. We’re used to seeing the Swede use that much-loved 3-wood of his, but we also saw him use his XR driver to devastating effect at Royal Troon.
