GREENS UP-DATE W/C 20TH AUGUST 2016
I am pleased to report that we have just achieved some very good greens measurement results. Alistair Beggs, Chief Agronomist, STRI visited us last Wednesday to take the usual measurements for our greens. I am really pleased that we have a set of figures showing our greens to be of the very highest standard.
Our greens staff must be congratulated on the superb progress over the past ten years or more in bringing the greens from among the worst in the region to be among the best greens in the region. The full STRI Report is on the website or if you are reading a printed copy of this up-date, it is attached.
The improvement in our greens has been achieved by following a sometimes-painful process of punchng holes of various sizes and filling with top dressing. I know this has led to complaints from some members, but we have stuck to the plan and we are now reaping the rewards. Thank you all for putting up with the process. Now, just as you thought it was all over we shall be attacking the greens surfaces once again in September. We shall repeat the "Graden" work on all greens.
For those who are not familiar with this work, we use a machine, which slits the greens to a depth of 15mm. It removes a significant amount of earth and then injects sand & bent grass seed into the slits. With luck, after this year's treatment, we shall not need to repeat the process for some years to come. We shall, of course continue to tine and top dress throughout the years ahead but we shall avoid tining and top dressing during the months of June, July and August as we have done this year. Just to bring us back down to earth, we still have a huge amount to do to improve many aspects of our course. These include, bunkers, drainage, thinning the rough and many more on our long list of projects.
Sadly, I believe we can never reach the destination of the "perfect" course - it is very much a journey and we have to adapt to the new challenges thrown up on a regular basis. In the short term, we need to be a bit smarter - we can make a difference by attending to some smaller but important details. Many of our bunkers are in need of major work, but I don't think we are helping matters as the levels of sand leave much to be desired. Jason is aware of this and will attend to this issue immediately.
Tidiness around the course is also a concern. For example, the 100 & 150-yard markers are rarely cleaned - other than by me! Jason will ensure they are cleaned regularly along with the stone markers on the tees and the sponsored tee signs.
And finally - I know it's still officially summer but, the Greens Committee are busy discussing plans for winter work and I shall let you know our plans once decided.
Rod Backhouse - Chairman Greens Committee

| One of the reasons we like Callaway's clothing is the technology involved that makes its garments so effective in hot conditions - be it Opti-Vent or Opti-Cool. Have a browse when you're next in, especially if you've got a lot of golf planned over what we hope will be a sunny back end of the summer. | | |
