Tour News
There was a lot going on in the world of golf last week with Brandon Stone winning in South Africa and Harold Varner winning in Australia where Paul Waring finished tied 45th.
It was also great to see Tiger back in action having had one of the highest birdie counts of the week but with the obvious rustiness having a lot of bogeys and the odd double bogey as well which is perfectly understandable after being out for 15 months.
Hopefully we will see him back in action soon.
BROMBOROUGH GOLF CLUB GREENS NEWSLETTER - WEEK COMMENCING 5TH DECEMBER 2016
Another week starts with frost!
We resorted to temporary greens once last year and already this winter the frost has forced us off the greens on several occasions. Why do we need to keep off the greens? I thought you might like to read what STRI say the damage we can cause if we do not protect our greens during frosty conditions. This is a piece they have sent to me this morning.
"When frozen, plant tissues are easily bruised by players' feet. Following a thaw, it is often possible to see brown footmarks for several weeks, particularly around hole sites. The greater the weight of play in hard frost, obviously the greater becomes the extent of this damage. Affected areas remain thin for long periods, altering the trueness of the putting surface, and are more susceptible to disease in spring. Long-term damage is caused when play takes place after a sudden thaw. In these conditions the top layer of thatch and soil becomes soft, whilst the underlying soil remains frozen. Root damage occurs from the shearing action as players' feet move the soft, unfrozen surface across the frozen sub-surface. This disrupts putting surfaces and creates weak areas that may not recover before the height of the competition season."
So, you see how important it is to move temporary greens during frosty conditions, we are ensuring the health of our greens for the spring and into summer. Having said that, I was approached last Thursday by one of our members who asked me why we were on temporary greens as "it wasn't frosty in Prenton" - well I'm sorry, but it was frosty in Bromborough!
What's on the agenda for this week?
- Leaf collection will be stepped up now the frost has gone
- Mats to be installed on the fourth tee for yellow & red courses
- Liquid fertiliser to all tees, par three tees - aeration & top-dressing
- Continue roto-raking bunkers
- 12th tee prepare area for turfing & move bin
- Lay turf to drainage channels and around area to right side of first green.
Note* the tree directly in front of the fourth tee will be felled on Wednesday to open up the green - the "gap" has closed to the point where only half of the green is visible as the trees have grown across.
The removal of this tree was recommended by Cheshire during their "slope rating" visit and also by Bob Taylor, STRI, Head of Ecology when he visited last year.
If you have a view on any aspect of the course, please let me know, preferably by email to: rod.backhouse@sky.com
Hoping for the continuation of the dry weather.
Best wishes,
Rod Backhouse
