Competition news

White tee Competition

The first white tee competition last Saturday was a great weekend for Steve Barry winning Div 1 with a great score of 40 points and Everton beating Leicester on Sunday. There were some other great scores in the good weather with Anthony Passingham coming 2nd in Div 1 with 39 points and Scott Bligdon 3rd with 37points beating Gary Crowder on a card playoff.

Div 2 was won by Hugh Jones with another great score of 38 points who supports a team down the East Lancs road who play in Red who I couldn't possibly mention in this newsletter. In 2nd place was new member Dave Allen with 37 points and in 3rd Dave Kirkwood also with 37 points beating, Dave Siddorn on a card playoff.

There were 22 twos worth £6.40 each and congratulations to Jamie Gillespie who got a hole in one on the 4th.

This Saturday I will be running a Pros competition for any of you who would like to play which will be a Stableford from the Yellow Tees.

Ladies Stableford

The Ladies Stableford on Tuesday was won with a fantastic score of 44 points by the inform Shan Ashcroft with Sharon Evans 2nd with 33 points beating Margaret Nelson on a card playoff.

Tour news

The Masters

I hope you all enjoyed the Masters last weekend which provided some great viewing. I luckily had both Sergio Garcia & Justin Rose in my syndicate so didn't really mind who won however in the end I was pleased Sergio won as it was his first Major.

I certainly think Seve was looking down on him with Justin missing those putts on the 11th,13th,17th & 18th. It also showed everyone is human with Jordan Speith after looking like he couldn't miss a putt on Saturday struggling on Sunday with Ricky Fowler also having an off day. It was also good to see Thomas Pieters & John Rahm well up there at the finish and gaining experience for the many years to come.

Course news

Greens Update Monday 10 April

Another sunny day although it's a lot cooler than the weekend! Great news for the course and for helping us to catch up with the work which built up in March when weather conditions delayed our tidying work. I am very pleased to report that the hollow tining and top-dressing went ahead successfully and was completed well within the timescale allotted. Well done to our greens staff. The greens should recover quickly and with one or two maximum, solid tine and top dress before the end of May, that will be it for the rest of the season. We may put a very light top-dressing down during the summer, but you won't even notice it, unless of course you happen to be playing when we do it!

The most startling "new" problems we have are the many areas of soft muddy turf, especially on the ninth & eighteenth. Now that the course has dried out, we shall verti-drain these areas. The verti-drain has rollers in front of and behind the tines. This should level the uneven surfaces at the same time as the tines drive into the earth to a depth of around 250mm. The bare patches will also be verti-drained in preparation for adding top-soil and seed in the next couple of weeks.

This brings me neatly to repairing the divots. I mentioned in last week's Newsletter that I thought the 19th April would be the date - I confirm that Wednesday 19th April is the date for a working party to fill the divots. I shall be grateful for any help with this job. I suggest that we meet at 9.00 am and fill as many divots as possible in a couple of hours. Details are as follows:

- Meet at 9.00am at the Pro Shop
- Bring Gloves, Trowel and a Bucket (if possible)
- Duration - 2 hours Approximately
- Bacon Batch and Coffee will be served when we have finished

Would you please let me know (0151 334 6591/07751 497581 or Jeff Ollerhead (0151 334 9965) know if you can give us a couple of hours of your time next wednesday. I look forward to hearing from you.

Some of this week's work includes:

- Fertilise tees, surrounds and weak areas
- Bunker maintenance (hoe, Flymo & strim)
- Sanding bunkers
- Continue to cut course
- Verti draining (as mentioned above)
- Rotorake bunkers
- Course tidy (branches rubbish etc.)

And finally, for this week - Jason and I walked the course yesterday to identify matters requiring our attention over the coming weeks. I shall give some details of this next week.
