I have added Rod's newsletter for this week below for those of you who may not have seen it. The course was looking great when I was out there on Wednesday we just need some warm weather and a bit of rain to get the greens growing.

Greens Newsletter - Week Commencing 1st May 2017

This week we welcome the Cheshire Seniors Ladies Championship to Bromborough. From a course presentation perspective, the timing of a prestigious event like this, is somewhat unfortunate. The weather conditions have not been conducive to any significant grass growth and several areas on the course are far from recovered from the rigours of winter. Nevertheless, we shall do our best to ensure it looks as good as possible.

The good news is that the greens are performing very well indeed. Alistair Beggs (STRI Head of Agronomy & Ecology), visited us last Thursday for the first of his half yearly course reviews. The usual checks of the greens were done, all revealed more than acceptable scores and all well within target range. I shall publish the report in full on the website when we receive it. Alistair commented on the late growth of the grasses on the greens. It is noticeable that the bent grass had not started its lateral growth - this is one reason why our "smoothness" readings were so good for this time of year.

After a diabolical March, we now need some warm rainfall to bring on the growth - the warmth appears to be on the way so we may need some irrigation to help matters along.

With this being another "short" week and the Cheshire Ladies Competition starting tomorrow, the greens staff will focus today on cutting as much of the course as possible. There will be little else done this week other than daily greens cutting, bunker raking and general tidying before the commencement of play.

Another matter discussed with Alistair Beggs last Friday was the cutting of the semi-rough. We continue to have problems with the current mower in achieving an acceptable finish for the semi. This year we are alternating the direction of cut on each occasion we cut the semi. During the growing season, we cut the semi-rough twice per week. This takes one member of staff four days. I am therefore reviewing what is available to achieve a good semi cut and to reduce the time taken to mow it. As usual, if you have any comments (good or bad) we should like to hear from you.
