Greetings golfers,

Welcome to another exciting edition of our weekly newsletter. From course records to golfing habits we do and don't recommend, this week's newsletter is a must read for all golfers! We have lots happening in the shop at the moment too, so be sure to pop your head in next time you're here and take a look around.

Competition news

Competition round up

Conditions were tough last Saturday with 39 points by Joe Clark good enough to win the Stableford Cup on a card playoff from Dave Brennan with Mathew Luxton coming 3rd in Div 2 with 38 points. Div 1 was very close with Mike Mcloughlin coming out on top with 38 points beating John Clegg, John Edwards and Darren Helsby on a card playoff. There were 23 Twos worth £6.75 each.

The Ladies Sue Harvey Trophy on Tuesday was won by Jan Evans with 36 points followed by Anita Robinson Shan Ashcroft & Dawn Skelland all with 35 points.

This weekend

I have been asked to remind you that those of you playing Sunday before the Invitation please remember the course has to be clear by 12.45 and once again could i ask those of you who book tee times and then cant play to cancel them as we are having a few no shows at present at busy times when other members would like to play but cant.

With no Saturday competition this week there are still a number of bookings for the the August Medal not paid for so please remember to pay by 1.00 pm next Wednesday.

Tour news

US PGA Championship

It will be different this week watching the PGA Championship back on the BBC. I hope Rory McIlroy  continues his good form and if he can improve his wedge play I think he will stand a great chance of winning as he has done before round Quail Hollow.

Changing the subject its good to hear the football banter starting again with the Premier league kicking off this weekend and I attach a photo I never thought I’d see, Loz wearing a Liverpool shirt!

Don't put yourself at a disadvantage

We always encourage the golfers we teach to get out on the practice ground between lessons. It’s through this repetition that swing changes start to feel more natural so the pupil can then hit the course full of confidence. We love good habits like this, but there is one habit we see all the time that we certainly don’t recommend…

NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE?

It’s not uncommon for us to see members playing a scuffed ball, using it until it eventually gets lost. But ball damage, such as worn dimples or surface cuts, can alter the airflow over your ball, making your trajectory more erratic and causing wayward shots and shorter carries.

You might think this would have minimal effect versus and unblemished ball, but a mark across just a few dimples can make 10 yards difference to a shot, as we’ve demonstrated in the illustration here.

IT'S AN EASY CHOICE

You have the ability to ensure your ball is the same on every hole, which is why we recommend finding one you like and sticking to it to improve your consistency.

Which one are you?

So you find yourself on the course facing 172 yards left to the pin; how do you work out which club to use? There is one method that many turn to, but we hope you’re not one of them...

 

PLUS OR MINUS 10 YARDS

Do you know how far you hit each iron, or do you just add or subtract 10 yards per club from your 150 club to find the one you need?

We come across many amateurs who do this, but you’d be surprised how far out this method is when we bring those golfers in for a gapping session, which helps explain why they miss so many greens.
