Club news

Men's Invitation Day

On Sunday 13th August Bromborough hosted its second Men’s Invitation of the year. We had a full start sheet with all holes being filled up with fourballs ready to play. The day overall was a great success with some exceptional scoring and all round enjoyment. The winners of the comp were John Edwards and his guest from Eastham Lodge, Jim Bradshaw with a score of 46 points. Second was the Captain of Bromborough Golf Club, Ray Newnes and his guest from Childwall, Jim Turner with a score of 44 points. Third on a card playoff was Steve Jones and his guest from Southport and Ainsdale, Ian Hirons with a score of 43 points.

Ladies Exchange with Ashton-in-Markerfield Golf Club

This week the ladies held an exchange day with Ashton-in-Makerfield Golf Club as their lady members came here on the Tuesday and our lady members went to their course on the Wednesday. Nothing but positive comments were spoken about Bromborough and the way in which they enjoyed their day. Similarly our lady members thoroughly enjoyed their day out yesterday and both clubs have agreed to host the same event next year at some stage.

USPGA Championship

Underestimated or under the radar?

Justin Thomas fulfilled many people’s dream on Sunday by claiming his first Major title at the USPGA Championship. The year’s final Major at Quail Hollow didn’t really ignite until the back nine on Sunday, where Thomas took centre stage.

The American looked to be heading towards trouble on the 10th only for his wayward tee shot to ricochet off a tree and back onto the fairway. If that wasn’t a sign that it was going to be Thomas’ day then what followed on the same hole definitely was.

The 24-year-old’s eight-foot birdie putt stopped on the edge of the hole, defiantly staying above ground for over seven seconds, before eventually dropping to the bottom of the cup. He followed this with a chip-in birdie at 13 and a birdie at his penultimate hole – set up by a sublime 214-yard 7-iron to 15 foot – to win the USPGA by two shots.

At 24 years of age, this win sees Thomas join Nicklaus, Woods, McIlroy and Spieth in being one of only five golfers to have won four times (including a Major) in a single season before turning 25. It really is hugely impressive when you think about it, which leads us on to this week's question:
