Welcome to another edition of our newsletter. In this week’s mail we have a special Video of the Week with none other than Rory McIlroy, we take a closer look at who will be trying to play their way into Bjorn's Ryder Cup team, and we offer a little advice on how to improve your game.

Competition news

The Bromborough Masters

So last Sunday saw the first running of The Bromborough Masters and what a day it was. Absolute horrendous weather in the morning through to midday looked like it might wipe the day out completely but fortunately the rain lightened and with a good bit of squidgying the course remained playable, thankfully.

It was amazing how quickly the course recovered and the water drained, which is a good sign moving forwards. The previous dry weather probably helped us in this instance. The feedback from the event was really good and I’m sure it will go from strength to strength in the future.

A massive thanks to all the volunteers involved in the day. There is no way the competition could have gone ahead without your hard work, effort and time. The Blue jacket was won by James Ashfield from Delamere Forest Golf Club with a great round of 72 in tough conditions.

Second place with a 73 was Paul Knight of Eastham Lodge and in third was Richard Fitzgerald who played in the very worst of conditions with a 74. The Nett prize was won by Brian Treadwell of Portal with a 69 beating our own Tom Shannon in a card playoff.

Well done to all!

Mens Yellow Medal

The men’s Yellow Medal which was splayed last Saturday was won by Alun Price with a nett 67 followed by Phil Jordan and John Neville both with 67s respectively.

Division 2 was won also with a 67 by Paul Kenney. There were then for 69s with Phil Levell and Dave Homes taking 2nd and 3rd on a cpo.

Mens Colt Team

One Final result to report. The men’s Colts team have won the league so they nor progress to the regional final so the very best of luck to them.

We’re doing well.

Ladies 16th Medal

The Ladies’ 16th Medal was tight at the top with the top 7 places spread by only two strokes. Wendy Ferguson claimed the number one spot with an impressive score of 70 (nett).

Wendy was closely followed by Jill Holmes in second place (71 nett) and Jan McGowan in third place on a CPO – Jan also achieved the lowest gross score. Well done to the winners and all who played!

Ladies A Team

Some great news also from the ladies A team who have won their semi-final Shield match against Portal at Antrobus this week so another final to look forward to.

They won the semi-final 4-3 so it was a very tight match. Congratulations and good luck in the final.

Just 4 weeks to go

The Ryder Cup is edging ever closer, with a lot of speculation over who will be chosen as one of the four wildcards on both sides of the Atlantic.

There is an expectation that USA Team Captain Jim Furyk will give one of those spots to a resurgent Tiger Woods, who can now be picked on form rather than reputation after experiencing a stellar comeback season. Others vying for a trip to Le Golf National in Paris are Zach Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Kuchar, Kevin Kisner and Tony Finau, providing Furyk with an embarrassment of riches to choose from.

Thomas Bjorn won’t know exactly who has qualified for his European team until September 2, but the big names – Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm – are dead certs. The bigger question lies in the wildcard picks. Ian Poulter has a fearsome Ryder Cup record, having never lost a singles match, and has played himself into good form this season. Paul Casey, Thomas Pieters, Russell Knox and Rafa Cabrera-Bello are all in contention too, not to mention Ryder Cup veterans Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia.

Setting your sights

How many times do you find yourself lining up your shot and thinking "this is about an 8-iron from here to the pin", only to find that you end up 10-15 yards short of the hole? Being able to utilise accurate yardages is a key step to taking your game to the next level, which is why we'd recommend using a GPS device to ensure you always know exactly how far you have left to the pin.
