Double delight for American duo…
There were victories for two of Team USA’s Ryder Cup stalwarts over the weekend, with Rickie Fowler overcoming a major blip on Sunday afternoon to hold-on to his overnight lead and claim the atmospheric Waste Management Phoenix Open, whilst big-hitting Dustin Johnson secured his first regular European Tour title at the inaugural Saudi Arabia International tournament.
Fowler’s final round wasn’t without incident, with one of the strangest dropping procedures taking place on the 11th hole leading to a triple bogey seven. Rickie’s chip shot on the 11th lacked spin and skidded through the damp green into the water just missing a bunker. After taking his penalty drop, Rickie walked to the green to view his options, and during this time his ball rolled back into the water. This led to some confusion between Rickie and his playing partners, but a rules official deemed the ball to be in play so another penalty drop was needed! Luckily he made the resulting putt to escape with a seven and go onto to win with impressive birdies on the closing stretch.
Once again the new rule changes were at the forefront of our viewing with I’m pleased to say common sense prevailing in the end with Denny McCarthy having his 2 shot penalty rescinded. It would have been interesting to see if it would have happened if the 2 shot penalty had meant he’d missed the cut.
Paul had another steady week finished tied 54th with a few of his dropped shots caused by pay a visit to the water. He now has some time off before playing again at the end of the month.

Back here at the club we had a very quiet week with the course being closed so Darren has kindly done a little report for you to keep you up to date with what’s going on out on the course which was done before today’s awful windy wet weather.
The Ladies competition on Tuesday unfortunately had to be abandoned due to some flags after the frost being put back on the greens so everyone didn’t play the same course. Apologies to Wendy Ferguson who had a great score of 37 points over the 15 holes played.
There are a couple of single slots available for this weekend’s best 2 from 4 competition. If you would like to play please give us a call and we will add you to the booking.

Course Report
The course is standing up reasonably well and we have managed to get a cut on the fairways and surrounds, this is mainly due to the drier winter we have had up until now.
We are now hand mowing greens during winter months; the hand machines have been fitted with brushes to lift the grasses for a cleaner cut. Hand mowing is preferred during the winter months as the brushing; cutting and a rolling during the hand mowing process improves putting surfaces.
Penetrant surfactants are applied monthly to help dry up greens surfaces, last month we applied a pigment that darkens the grass, the idea is that during times of low light the darker coloured grass will absorb more light for plant health. Iron has also been applied to help defend the grass plant from disease, this is handy as it also burns off moss and gives a good colour as well.
The cold weather and snowy conditions have slowed up the irrigation and bunker projects but we are starting to pick up speed now and hoping to get some really good quality bunker construction done and ready for the season ahead.
The eco bunker turf tiles come pre-cut into sizes however we have to cut them to shape dependant on the bunker design, so there is a lot of work on the bunkers back at our maintenance compound that golfers don’t see, but it has been handy in the snow when there isn’t much to do on the course.
Originally when we installed the new backbone of the irrigation there was a lot of open trenches, these have now been reinstated and look a lot tidier.
We are weather dependant at the moment but also managing jobs around it to keep proactive and up to date.
Just one note to golfers: we have green stakes out on the course, these are to protect the greens complex, so please don’t ignore them, there are a lot of golfers that just walk straight through with trollies, remember it’s your course and protecting it now will improve the course in spring when you want higher standards.
