Competition news

The Bromborough Masters

The Bromborough Masters was a huge success on Sunday. Thanks to all the members who helped out on the day. The attached photo shows the 2 winners.

Mark Kimpton won the Best Gross with a 71 on a card playoff from Paul Knight and Sean Booth won the Best Nett 78-10-68 on a card playoff from Neil Dermott.

You will all be pleased to hear that the course received positive comments all day and the competition is already over 50% full for next year so if you wish to play book now to get the tee time you want.

August Medal

Saturday’s August Medal was won in Div 1 by our Chairman Andy Leadbetter 78-10-68 whose handicap over recent weeks had drifted to double figures for the first time in a long time. He is now down to 8.7 so has got another 8 rounds before it happens again!

If I get my P45 after that comment I’ll let you know in next week’s newsletter!

WR&Y Competitions

Please also remember the WR&Y Competitions on a Thursday you can play in at any time of the day from 8.30am till the last tee time which depends on daylight hours. There will still be a limited amount of tee times reserved in the afternoon for WR&Y Competitors only.

St Anselmians golf day

Tomorrow we have the St Anselmians golf day which is a shotgun start at 2.00pm There are 31 teams taking part so the course is likely to be closed until approximately 6.30 and those of you playing in the morning please vacate the course by 1.50pm.

Ladies Stableford

The Ladies Stableford on Tuesday was won in Div 1 by Caroline Berry with 37 points on a card playoff from Izzy May Div 2 was won by Monica Carroll with 36 points and Div 3 was won by Jill Warren with 34 points.

Tour news

The race for The Masters

Rory McIlroy has 15 million reasons to smile this week after winning the Tour Championship for the second time in his career - a record he now shares with a certain Mr Tiger Woods - and scooping a cool $15 million prize as a result.

The Northern Irishman carded a final-round 66 to finish the week on 18-under-par, four shots clear of Xander Schauffele in second and five clear of playing partner Brooks Koepka.

It was that Sunday pairing of McIlroy and Koepka that caught the eye as the two most dominant players on Tour this year went toe-to-toe in a Ryder Cup style battle. The duo are now ranked 1st and 2nd in the World Rankings, with Koepka occupying top spot as he has for most of 2019.

Between them, they have won eight majors (four each) but remarkably neither has claimed The Masters. Whilst it may seem a long way away, you can be sure the target for both these players in 2020 will be to make sure they don the Green Jacket at Augusta next spring.

Flop shot required

Type ‘flop shot’ into Google and Phil Mickelson’s name will be at the top of the search. The five-time Major champion is the go-to guy when it comes to shots around the green, especially the flop shot. So, if you want to follow suit and impress your golfing partners, here’s our guide to this magical shot.

Technique

The first thing you must do is accelerate through the ball and stay aggressive. It's when we get a little scared or take our eye off the ball that things start to go wrong, all of which we can explain during a short game lesson.

Wedge

Your wedge plays a vital role with worn grooves and incorrect bounce leaving you at risk of a bladed shot through the green. Nightmare!
