Competiton news

The Autumn Meeting

Rob Lowles continued his good form this season winning the Autumn Meeting Div 1 with 76-7-69 and the Hulme Lever Trophy which is the best nett scores from the Spring & Autumn Meeting with a total of 140 with Dave Allen 2nd with 145.

2nd in Div 1 was Tom Shannon with 78-8-70 and 3rd Paul Adams 81-10-71 who won on a card playoff from Dave Allen and Nick Kearns.

Div 2 was won By Joe Clarke 83-15-68 followed by Roy Joynson 87-17-70 and in 3rd Alan Roberts 92-20-72.

There were 24 Twos worth £6.85 each.

Ladies Autumn Meeting

Louise McLoughlin also continued her good form winning the Ladies Autumn meeting on Tuesday with 76-7-69. Div 2 was won by Enid Roberts with 99-26-73 and Div 3 by Wendy Ferguson with 101-29-72.

The European Senior Ladies Team Championship

Caroline is away this week playing for England in the European Senior Ladies Team Championship in Bulgaria, so my chocolate diet is going well!

It's 36 holes of strokeplay with 5 out of 6 scores to count for the first two days and then the top 8 country’s qualify for the knockout stage.

England finished 3rd in the Strokeplay 1 shot behind Sweden & Ireland and are playing France today in the Quarter Final.

Caroline finished 8th equal out of the 103 taking part with scores of 76 & 80 in very windy conditions. The winning score was 73 & 79.

It's Winter League time...

This is not my favourite time of year when I have to say we are now accepting entries to the Winter League. Please write the name of your “pair” on the front of an envelope and pass it to the Professional, inclusive of the entrance fee of £15 per pair.

Your attention is drawn to the Competition Rules detailed on the notice board in the locker room.

The Final will be staged on Sunday 15th March 2020. This will only be moved if adverse weather conditions are encountered.

Intention of entry can be sent to cliveplummer@btinternet.com. Your envelope and entry fee must still be submitted to the Professional.

I would be more than grateful if you could bring the correct money in so I don’t run out of £5 notes.

Closing date - Sunday 29th September 2019.

Club news

Some reminders for a busy Saturday ahead...

The course will be open for play on Sunday morning between the Captain's Prize Semi Finals and Final. The Ladies Foursomes final and the Arthur Bullivant final and Gordon Edwards Junior final will be played after the Semi Finals have gone out due to players being in two finals.

If you play please will you make sure you repair all pitchmarks and rake all bunkers.

There will also be a Mixed Foursomes playing at 8.20am on Saturday morning, so if they catch you up please let them through.

Soderberg pips consistent McIlroy to European title

Sweden’s Sebastian Soderberg held his nerve to win a five-way playoff at the Omega European Masters from Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club on Sunday to claim his maiden title.

Included in the quintuple of playoff hopefuls was a certain Rory McIlroy who fresh from winning $15 million at East Lake last week, may have been forgiven for being a little off the boil.

However, a sublime seven-under-par on Friday put him right in contention with no signs of weariness to end the tournament on 14-under-par with Kalle Samooja, Andres Romero, Lorenzo Gagli and eventual winner Soderberg.

Remarkably, the tournament was settled at the first playoff hole - the par 4 18th - with Soderberg steadying himself to sink a ten-footer for birdie whilst McIlroy, Romero, and Samooja could only manage par with Gagli taking five.

Interesting fact – Playoff frenzy

Sunday was the fourth year in a row the European Masters has been decided by a playoff whilst the tournament has witnessed eight playoffs in the last thirteen years.

Why the recent surge?

Here’s some homework for you: the next time you're watching golf on TV, keep an eye on the number of pros using putters with larger heads. Whilst some golfers still prefer the traditional blade style putters from years gone by, over 60% of PGA Tour players have a larger headed putter in their bag today – the question is: why?

High MOI putters

These are all to do with stability, feel and alignment. When you take a look at TaylorMade’s Spider X and TP Black Copper Ardmore 3 putters (pictured above) you will see what we mean.

The larger head style of both putters is designed to increase MOI, which is crucial as it means the putter face will twist less at impact, especially when struck away from the sweet spot.
