Hello Golfers,

I’ll start of on a very positive note. A massive congratulations to Darren and his greenstaff who picked up the BIGGA Greenkeeping Project Of The Year Award at the National BIGGA Awards. I know it’s something that everyone around the club are very proud of and rightly so. The ongoing projects on the course look to be coming along well so really looking forward to seeing how they look when the season comes along.

The weather has been pretty kind this week so the course is fully open as we speak apart from the 10th hole due to ongoing works. Thanks for your cooperation with the green staff on this.

Competition news

Ladies Treble 5 Stableford Result

The Ladies Treble 5 Stableford on Tuesday was won by Sharon Evans, Louise Winterbottom and Jackie Johnston. My Mum doing me proud there, she’s won more than me this year which isn’t ideal! She did say Louise and Jackie played great as they came in with 62 points. Amanda Dixon, Barbara Gillbanks and Pam Darch came in second with 55 points.

Alex takes on Paul Waring in the 14 Club Challenge

Paul Waring started the season very strongly last week in Abu Dhabi finishing in tied 12th position after a brilliant weekend of golf. He’s in Dubai this week for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic so best of luck to him there. The Emirates Golf Club is one of my favourite courses and it looks like the rough is up, so I’m quite glad I didn’t get the invite this year. I got Paul ready for these events by having a 14 Club Challenge with him. It was great fun to film this one.

Layer up

Last week we talked about one of our favourite topics: rain! Whilst waterproof protection is key for staying dry when caught in a downpour, combining layers of clothing underneath is vital if you want to enjoy the warmth without being so restricted that you can’t complete your backswing.

What do we mean by layering?

Lots of golfers are still in the habit of putting on as many layers as they possibly can in the winter to combat the cold – a vest, turtleneck, polo, sweater and jacket – but today’s golf clothing could easily cut that down by half.

What do we suggest?

From polos that keep you at a cool temperature in the summer to thermal mid-layers like the one pictured above by FootJoy, having the right piece of clothing can do the job of several poor layers. Pop by the shop to have a look at our clothing collections.
